The sports nutrition market is set to reach $45 billion by 2022, with new products landing on our supermarket shelves, influencers’ social accounts and on our favourite online stores almost everyday.

With such a vast choice of products and a population set on partaking in ever more grueling physical challenges, what sort of things should we be looking for in our next sports nutrition product?

Protein products may dominate the sports nutrition market, but when it comes to endurance it is all about refuelling and replenishing those diminishing glycogen stores. Glycogen may be a priority, but here are some of the other nutrients that you will find in Tribal products that are perfect for endurance sports:

  • Carbohydrate

Replenishing carbohydrate in the right way will often be the power that stops you from hitting the dreaded wall during your endurance challenge. Products rich in carbohydrate come in many different forms including drinks, gels, chews, bars and snacks, but the key is avoiding where possible products with high levels of artificial sugars or sweetners.

  • Protein

Often perceived as a supplement only for building muscle, protein is an essential for endurance athletes especially at the recovery stage of the event. Protein will help to replenish and rebuild muscle fibres, helping you to prepare more quickly for your next big event. Protein comes in so many different forms and doesn’t have to be drunk as a shake, eating the right foods or opting for products or bars with protein, can have the same effect for recovery.

  • Hydration

For many endurance athletes, over-hydration can becomes a problem because there is a tendency to drink more water than your body needs, which can actually have a negative impact on your body and performance. There is no correct formula for how much your body needs because every person is different, but drink before during and after your activity and listen to your body.

  • Iron

Iron is an essential mineral found in every cell of the body. Its main role is to transport oxygen in the blood to the tissues. Iron ensures that your muscles are working properly and also helps to convert carbohydrates into energy during endurance exercise.

  • Vitamin C

Vitamin C is required for the growth and repair of tissues in all parts of your body. It is used to form collagen, a protein used to make skin, scar tissue, tendons, ligaments, and blood vessels. It is also essential for the healing of wounds, and for the repair and maintenance of people’s cartilage, bones, and teeth.

The inspiration behind Tribal was to take a more natural stance when it comes to sports nutrition. There are hundreds drinks’ and products on the market that can offer the protein and energy we need for endurance exercise, but they most often come with a list of unknown ingredients. Founder of Tribal Active Nutrition Chris Martin said ‘Working in Africa for years I couldn’t help but see the potential of something like Baobab in the sports nutrition world, it has been used as a staple part of the diet in African communities for years and so why couldn’t we bring the same ingredient to sports nutrition?’
